Why Stanley The Border Collie Is The Internet Hero We Need

There's no denying it's been a terrible month for social media.

The live streaming of the Christchurch massacre on Facebook; the racist and sexist slurs directed towards AFL and AFLW stars online.

But we at 10 News First in Perth discovered the hero the internet needs: an 18-month-old Border Collie named Stanley.

The handsome pup first rose to fame several weeks ago when his owners uploaded a video of his spectacular ball catch to reddit.

It made its way onto several Facebook pages, and on just one post it had three million views:

We went along to Stanley's home in Bedford to see the star in action. But this interview with the now-famous pooch didn't exactly go according to plan.

To be fair, the mic sock does look like a black tennis ball, so we can hardly blame him.

But hours after this story went to air that clip found its way onto reddit, where it very quickly became one of its most popular in the site’s history.

In six days the post has had 157,000 upvotes and 1700 comments.

Some said I looked like Rowan Atkinson, others loved it so much they decided to sketch the scene.

The viral video process kicked off again -- kind of like a weird viral dog "Inception".

Within hours there were several online news stories from websites all around the world.

This post on the 9gag Instagram has been the most popular, with a ridiculous 7.2 million views.

How do videos go viral? Experts say there’s no rhyme or reason behind what becomes popular online.

"The internet is like a big spider web -- all it takes is one person to splinter off and then it goes from string to string to string,” said social media expert Meg Coffey from Coffey and Tea.

"Videos that go viral appeal to a person at a certain moment in time -- it's an emotional thing.

"What goes viral today may not tomorrow and may not have yesterday. It really is about the right time at the right place.

But having an extremely photogenic dog probably helps too.

"They are loyal, they are cuddly, they are wonderful,” Ms Coffey said.

"In a world full of chaos, a dog is pure.”

Stanley’s own instagram account (@Stanleythecollie) has grown in size by a few thousand followers, but the energetic pooch remains grounded and still loves by the motto ‘ball is life’.

"Stanley is so the hero we need right now,” said Ms Coffey.

"It’s pure joy. No ads. No gimmicks. Just nature at it’s best. And that’s why it worked."
