Response from Woolworths

“Deforestation is an important issue and one we take seriously in our supply chain. We’re active participants of the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework - an industry-led initiative to tackle environmental challenges faced by the Australian beef industry, including deforestation.The Framework is used by industry to guide and track performance on-farm and through the supply chain. It provides consumers, government and industry with a snapshot of the beef industry’s performance across environmental, welfare, social and economic areas. We’ll continue working closely with our supply partners and the Framework to drive sustainable practices in our beef supply chain.”

Response from Coles

“Coles is committed to sustainable beef production and participates in the Australian Beef  Sustainability Framework, an initiative of the Red Meat Advisory Council managed by Meat and Livestock Australia. The framework has identified six priority areas to drive continuous improvement including managing land for environmental outcomes and changes in vegetation.We consider the framework the most appropriate way to address climate and environmental issues facing the beef industry – such as emissions reduction and deforestation –  from a national and industry-wide perspective.”

Response from ALDI

“We scored zero in the Wilderness Society survey not because we do not have deforestation programs or care about the sustainability of Australia’s forests. We scored zero because we did not complete their survey. ALDI customers can purchase any product in our range with knowledge that we source with respect for people (labour) and the environment." - ALDI Australia spokesperson.

Response from McDonalds

“We know deforestation is an important environmental issue, which is why McDonald’s has made a commitment to eliminate deforestation from its global supply chains by 2030; with an interim target of the end of 2020 for specific industries, including beef, chicken, palm oil, coffee and fibre. 

Locally, we have been working with the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework to advance sustainability, which includes deforestation, and will continue to partner with the meat industry and key stakeholders as these commitments are implemented in Australia.  

We recognise that deforestation is a complex issue, and while our farmers are facing one of the harshest droughts on record, we will continue to support the local agricultural industry through the purchase of Australian produce and products for our supply chain.”
