The Melbourne Cup Outfit That Took 800 Hours To Create
Spending a whopping 800 hours handcrafting her entry into MYER's Fashions On The Field, Sydney punter Athena certainly made a statement in her flamingo-inspired outfit for Lexus Melbourne Cup Day.
The Melbourne Cup Carnival is a day to get creative when it comes to your race day looks, but one woman at this year's Lexus Melbourne Cup has kicked thing up a notch with her dazzling handcrafted gown and her sky-high headpiece that was entered in the MYER Fashions On The Field competition.
"I spent around 800 hours making this outfit," Athena told 10 daily at the event, adding, "It was inspired by the flamingo".
According to the Sydneysider, a birdwatching experience in California inspired the design of the intricate outfit.
"I really enjoyed it and I loved the colour of the birds," she explained.
Describing the laborious process behind such a design, Athena revealed that it often takes her "years to come up with a design like this".
"All the fabric feathers you can see here are hand-cut," she explained, adding, "It takes 300 hours to hand-cut all the fabric pieces and join together all the pieces".
She added, "I always come here for the competition and I'm also meeting a lot of lovely people -- we all have the same interests and its nice to socialise with like-minded people."
Props to Athena for creating such an original Melbourne Cup look -- and honestly? We think she pulled off the bird-inspired look far better than others have in the past...
