Brrrr! Freezing Cold For Kennedy Oaks Day, Snowing In The VIC Alps

Ah, Melbourne spring. You're so utterly unpredictable.

You expect the Melbourne weather to be a little changeable at the best of times, but the weather gods have really turned on a doozy of a day for Kennedy Oaks Day at Flemington.

The maximum temperature in Melbourne is tipped to hit 17 degrees, which is cool enough, but it's going to feel a lot, lot colder than that, with strong westerly winds and persistent showers from about lunchtime onwards.

The good news?

It's obvious. Tune in to our Oaks Day coverage on Network 10 (from 1pm AEST) where it's always toasty and warm.

The unexpected news?

It's already lightly snowing in the Victorian Alps, with unseasonably heavy falls of 20-40 cm expected in the high country of both NSW and Victoria by the end of Friday.

Late spring snow is not that uncommon in the mountains. It snowed twice in the last two weeks of October, and it also snowed earlier this week on Lexus Melbourne Cup day.

She's the face of Network 10's Melbourne Cup coverage. But it might surprise you how it all started for Francesca Cumani.

But despite the obvious warming trend associated with climate change, cold Antarctic snaps can still strike southern parts of Australia in any season.

Meanwhile at Flemington, there's no chance of snow, but for those having a punt, you can expect the track to soften considerably by the time the Kennedy Oaks jumps at 5:50 pm.

Early on Thursday morning, the track was rated 4 on the official scale of 1-10, where one is rock hard and 10 is pretty much a bog. Expect the track to end up more like a 6, 7 or 8 by the Kennedy Oaks jumps (you can monitor the track's condition here).
