Melbourne Cup Shock As Placings Amended After Protest

OK, here's exactly what happened.

In a Lexus Melbourne Cup sensation, placings have been amended after a stewards' protest. So what does this mean?

The original placings were:

1. Vow And Declare. 2. Master Of Reality. 3. Prince Of Arran. 4. Il Paradiso

The amended placings are:

1. Vow And Declare. 2. A Prince Of Arran. 3. Il Paradiso. 4. Master Of Reality

Here's how the drama unfolded.

Things got super tight in the final 100 metres of the Melbourne Cup.

Master of Reality (left) rolls in on Il Paradiso (centre) with the winner on the right.

Master Of Reality, with legendary England-based Italian jockey Frankie Dettori aboard in his 17th Melbourne Cup ride (he's never finished better than second), was leading.

But as Master Of Reality got tired, he started rolling in towards the rails. It was at this point that he hampered Il Paradiso (in the blue and orange colours), who was looking for a gap.

In the shadows of the post, Vow And Declare darted through along the rails to take the lead. Master of Reality finished second.

Meanwhile out wide, Prince of Arran was running on for a gallant third, the same place he filled last year.

But stewards ruled that the interference was worthy of a protest, and they ruled in favour of Il Paradiso -- effectively saying Master Of Reality had impeded its run.

Master Of Reality was relegated to fourth. The horse it impeded, Il Paradiso was promoted to second, while A Prince Of Arran was promoted to third.
