Man Accused Of Raping Melbourne Jogger 10 Times Allegedly Held Victim's Head Underwater

WARNING, DISTRESSING CONTENT: A man who allegedly attacked a woman while she was jogging around a Melbourne park has been hit with 10 rape charges over a horrific ordeal, which allegedly lasted several hours.

The intellectually disabled man allegedly raped, choked and nearly drowned a woman he attacked while she was jogging in the suburb of Coburg on Tuesday.

Joel Russo, 25, was hit with a string of alleged offences including 10 rape charges, one of attempted rape and three of sexual assault over the attack.

He is also accused of holding his alleged victim's head underwater and choking her, court documents show.

That led to charges of reckless conduct endangering life and reckless conduct endangering serious injury. Russo was also charged with robbery over an unrelated matter.

Police have said his alleged victim survived the attack and went to a nearby food outlet to raise the alarm.

Russo asked not to be brought into Melbourne Magistrates Court for his filing hearing on Thursday, where his lawyer said the 25-year-old had bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, an acquired brain injury and intellectual disability.

He was arrested about seven hours after the woman was attacked at Merri Creek on Tuesday evening.

Russo is charged with a total of 17 offences.

He has been prescribed anti-depressants and also takes medication for chronic back pain, the court was told.

His lawyer did not apply for bail and Russo was remanded to reappear for a committal mention via video link on March 12.
