WATCH: Van Slams Into Shopfront, Missing Mum And Bub By Seconds

A mother and her baby have narrowly escaped tragedy on a shopping strip in Melbourne's east, where a van crashed into a shop front seconds later.

CCTV captured the incident in Mooroolbark on Tuesday morning.

In the vision, a woman is seen pushing a pram moments before a car appears to abruptly crash into another parked van, ploughing it into a local massage parlour.

Just five seconds earlier and it would have almost certainly ended in tragedy.

Witnesses on the busy Manchester Rd strip told 10 News First they heard a loud bang, before two passengers of the vehicle that rammed the van allegedly fled the scene on foot.

A 25-year-old homeless man who was driving the crashed vehicle stayed at the scene, where he was arrested.

He is assisting police with their inquiries, including blood and alcohol testing.
