Police Officers Attacked By Drunk Man Celebrating Birthday
A Bankstown father has admitted to elbowing, punching and even biting two police officers -- making the admission just hours after the attack.
Junior Filipo was celebrating his 26th birthday with family and friends at the Collingwood Hotel in Liverpool on Monday night. Things “escalated”, according to his girlfriend, and he had to be subdued with capsicum spray and tasers before he was arrested.
Filipo and his brother were playing on poker machines around 2am on Tuesday when they were asked by hotel staff to leave due to their level of intoxication. However, they continued to play, so police were called.
Responding officers say they were met by an aggravated Filipo, who elbowed one officer in the ribs, punched another in the face and even bit one of the officers on the leg after he was tasered.
“It's out of character, he's not like this... it was just birthday drinks and it escalated,” his partner and mother of his child, Memory Eliu told reporters.
“I just said sorry... I apologised on behalf of my partner because it's not like him and I do understand the police had their job to do as well.”
Filipo was arrested and taken to Liverpool Hospital suffering puncture wounds from the taser, a swollen wrist and injuries to his nose and mouth.
He was later charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and refusing to leave a licensed premises.
He spent less than 12 hours in custody before pleading guilty to all four charges.
The Bankstown man was required to forfeit $1000 and a strong character reference before he was released on strict bail.
He is also not allowed to drink alcohol in public while the case is pending.
Security vision of the violent outburst will be played at his sentencing hearing at the end of April.
