Adam Hills Auctions Off Brexit Beard For Bushfire Relief
It's been a hairy 15 months for Australian comedian Adam Hills, after he vowed to not shave his beard until Britain was officially out of the European Union.
On Friday night, Hills was finally able to shave his beard during a special Brexit edition of his television show 'The Last Leg'.
Hills was joined by co-hosts Alex Brooker and Josh Widdicombe, as well as special guests Armando Iannucci, Guz Khan, Aisling Bea and Geoff Norcott to mark the occasion.
As the clock struck 11pm, the official hour the U.K. and Northern Ireland left the EU, the clippers were taken to Hills' impressive facial hair.
Hills posted the beard on eBay, cheekily noting it had "previously been used" on the listing.
"I’ve spent just over a year growing a beard. I said I would do it until Brexit was sorted, and now it is, kinda," he said.
"I am offering the remains of this beard to the highest bidder, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Bushfire Relief Fund in Australia."
The bidding started at 99p (A$1.95) and had reached over £1500 (A$2950) within hours despite the page initially crashing due to high traffic.
However shortly afterwards eBay removed the listing after it went "over the selling limit", Hills said on Twitter.
"Working on getting it back up. Will keep you posted," he said.
It's been a long wait for Hills to shave, with the Brexit deadline extended by 10 months past the March 29 deadline.
Hills appeared on U.K. show This Morning on Friday in the hours before the shave, and admitted he thought he would be growing out the beard for just 10 weeks.
"March 29 came round and they were making amendments to Brexit, so we thought we'd make amendments to my beard," he said.
"They brought out a big wheel and there was Mr T, Abraham Lincoln, and this (referencing his beard) is the Geoff from Byker Grove."
