One of the witnesses, Christy Mittler, who works at the Stuebner Airline Veterinary Hospital helped performed CPR until she could feel a pulse.

"His shoes and his socks got blown off his feet, we rolled him over and we were sweeping out his stuff,"  Mittler told the US TV network ABC.

"We were knocking him on his back, telling him, It’s okay. You got hit by lightning".

First aid responders were quickly called to the scene and Coreas was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The lightning strike was so strong it reportedly created a small crater in the concrete where Coreas was walking.

Coreas' sister, Daena Coreas-Delgado helped set up a GoFundMe page to help cover medical costs for her brother's recovery.

The GofundMe page is set at AUD$45,000 and by Sunday had reached almost AUD$28,000.

On Saturday local time, Daena said her brother was still in the Intensive Care Unit in hospital and had lost hearing from one ear.

"Currently, he is in pain he will be getting surgery on his left ear in a month from now," she said on the GoFundMe page.

"He has burned marks from the lightning from his chest down to his thigh & on his left foot," she added.

"Also he appreciates the outpouring love he is getting from everyone".

Officers eventually found Coreas' dogs after launching a search party.
