Oldest Woman To Ever Give Birth Has Twins, Hubby Is 82

An elderly woman has given birth to twin girls in southern India.

Mangayamma Yaramati, 73, gave birth to the twins on Thursday in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

She is believed to be the oldest person ever to give birth.

The woman's husband Sitarama Rajarao, 82, told BBC Telugu the pair were incredibly happy to finally be parents after decades of heartache where they were unable to conceive.

"The mother and the babies are doing well," Dr. Uma Sankar, the woman's doctor, told BBC Telugu.

Given Mangayamma's age, the doctors performed a C-section and will keep her under observation for the next 21 days.

Despite their age, the pair maintain having children was vitally important to them. Yaramati told the BBC she endured years of bullying and stigmatisation by people in her village because she struggled to conceive children naturally.

"They would call me a childless lady ... so this is the happiest time of my life," she said.

Just one day after the girls were born, Rajarao suffered a stroke and is currently being treated in hospital.

This is not the first case of an elderly Indian woman accessing IVF treatment to become a mother. Back in 2016, Daljinder Kaur, who was also in her 70s, gave birth to a boy.
