'A Real Surprise': Man Accidentally Circumcised In Hospital Mix-Up
It was a case of mistaken identity that had a disastrous outcome.
Terry Brazier went to the Leicester Royal Infirmary located about two hours northeast of London for a bladder procedure.
When hospital staff mistook him for another patient, the 70-year-old was accidentally circumcised. Brazier told British newspaper the Daily Star that he was so distracted conversing with medical staff that he didn't notice he was having the incorrect procedure until it was too late.
"[It was] a real surprise," he told the newspaper.
"They didn't know what to say when they found out they'd done it, they said they can't send me back to the ward and they needed to talk to me."
Brazier has since received a payout as compensation for the medical muddle. Following an investigation by the Infirmary, he was awarded 20,000 Pounds (AUD $35,000).
Medical director at University Hospitals of Leicester, Andrew Furlong issued a statement apologising to Brazier for the incident.
"We take events like this very seriously and carried out a thorough investigation at the time to ensure that we learnt from this incident and do all we can to avoid it happening again," the statement said.
"Whilst money can never undo what happened, we hope this payment provides some compensation."

It is unclear how long ago Brazier had the accidental circumcision.
