Revealed: Why British Tourist Lied About Gang Rape By 12 Men
A British teenager who claimed she was raped by 12 men has revealed why she fabricated the story.
The 19-year-old woman, who cannot be identified, told police she was gang-raped by a group of Israeli men in a Cyprus hotel room on July 17. The men are aged between 15 and 18.
The 12 teenagers were rounded up by police and arrested soon after the woman reported the apparent crime to police. They were in jail for nine days until the woman came clean about her fabrication.
The woman told police she had falsified the story because she was annoyed at some of the men, who she claims, filmed themselves while having consensual sex with her.
She withdrew her claims against the 12 men after revealing she did have sexual contact with some of the members of the group, but that she was not raped.
The 19-year-old British national was arrested by police and appeared in court in Famagusta, Cyprus on Monday.
Photos show her leaving the court with a jacket over her head and a police officer guiding her into a waiting car. The teenager's mother was also reportedly with her during the hearing which was postponed until Tuesday.
The 12 men flew back to Tel Aviv after they were released from prison. Five of the 12 were initially released after there was no DNA evidence linking them to the crime. The final seven were freed after the woman changed her version of events.
During the ordeal, the men -- the youngest just 15 years of age -- maintained their innocence. At the time of their arrest, some of the men told The Jerusalem Post of their 'brutal' treatment by police.
"The police hit us, they broke our noses, and the girl is lying,” the Israeli suspects told the outlet through a lawyer.
“Help us, get us out of here, you'll see we're right and that we're innocent."
The men's court proceedings were conducted privately due to their age and Cypriot law regarding rape trials.
At the time of their release, the 12 men had not yet entered pleas.
