Senior NSW Cop's Son And Girlfriend Killed In 'Horrific Circumstances'
Australian man Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend were shot dead on a remote Canadian highway, New South Wales police have confirmed.
Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese, from the U.S., were found dead by the side of the Alaska Highway in British Columbia on Monday.
Fowler is the son of senior New South Wales policeman Stephen Fowler.
"We are providing support to him and his family," NSW Police said.
NSW Assistant Commissioner Mark Jones said they have been told the young couple was shot in "what can only be described as horrific circumstances".
The two were killed between July 14 and 15, police said.
The family of Fowler released a statement, saying he had been lost "in the most terrible of circumstances".
"To lose someone so young and vibrant, who was travelling the world and just enjoying life to the full, is devastating," they said.
"To know his beautiful girlfriend, Chynna Deese of Charlotte, North Carolina also lost her life in this violent event is too cruel.
"All our love and best wishes go to Chynna’s family and friends."
Members of the family are have travelled to Canada to bring Fowler home to Australia.
Two detectives from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad have joined Canadian authorities to help with the investigation.
An old blue minivan was found at the scene and police are looking for anyone who saw the vehicle or offered assistance, according to a RCMP media release which gave no identifying details for the pair.
They're also appealing for anyone that travelled the stretch of highway around the time of the discovery to come forward.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Friday said they were offering consular assistance to the family of an Australian man who died in Canada.
"Due to our privacy obligations we will not provide further comment," a DFAT statement said.
