Man Mauled To Death By Dogs Suffered More Than 100 Bites
Dog traps have been set up in a wooded area were a man was mauled to death while taking a shortcut home.
Melvin Olds was discovered last week near Lake Placid, Florida.
According to his family, the 45-year-old had taken a shortcut through a wooded path and never made it home on Thursday.
“I thought a dog was a man’s best friend,” Cynthia Hill, Olds’ mother, told a local TV station.
“He was a good person, a good man. Just so hurt, deeply because it’s so unexpected.”
An autopsy revealed the father-of-five had sustained more than 100 dog bites, the Highlands County Sheriff's Office said.
Six dogs have been captured in the area so far, and their bite size matches with the wounds on Olds' body.
"But that alone is not enough to say for sure that they were the animals involved," the Sheriff's office said.
"DNA from those dogs will be compared to DNA collected from the wounds to see if a positive connection can be made."
The county's animals services department has set traps and will patrol the area for any more loose dogs which may have been involved in the attack.
"While we may have the dogs that were responsible for this horrible tragedy, we won’t know for sure for a while,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said.
