Healthy Dog Euthanised After Owner Demands It Be Buried With Her
Shih Tzu, Emma, was put down and cremated, her remains placed in an urn in the casket of her dead owner.
Emma arrived at the Chesterfield County Animal Shelter in Chesterfield, Virginia, on March 8.
During her two week stay, shelter workers desperately tried to convince the executor of the dead woman's estate to let the dog live.
“We did suggest they could sign the dog over on numerous occasions because it’s a dog we could easily find a home for and re-home,” manager of Chesterfield Animal Services, Carrie Jones, told WWBT.
Their pleas fell on deaf ears and Emma was taken on March 22 to fulfil her late owner's dying wish.
The poor pup, with no known ailments, was taken to a local vet to be euthanised, her remains were then taken to a pet cremation centre before her ashes were placed into an urn so she could lay to rest with her human.
The case has sparked a huge legal debate -- in Virginia, burying animal remains in the same plot as a human is against the law unless the cemetery is privately owned.
News of the incident has spread like wildfire on social media, with many slamming the dead owner as "heartless".
"What a selfish monster," one person wrote.
"WTF!!! people don't care for animals in life or death!!! this is heartless, inhumane, and pitiful!!!! and the people who killed said dog are even more trash!!" said another.
