As the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral burns Parisians can only watch on stunned.
Hundreds of people currently line the streets of Paris, watching on in stunned silence as pieces of the cathedral collapse before their eyes.
Heartbreaking images of the cathedral in flames continue to flood through as Parisians are praying in the streets and watching, many in tears.
The main structure has been saved but there is no denying the extensive damage the cathedral now has. The fire destroyed one of the church's iconic spires which collapsed moments ago.
Video has emerged of Parisians singing a sombre rendition of Ava Maria as they watch on as the fire continues to engulf the church. Groups of Parisians have also been seen praying as they watch on.
"Like all our compatriots, I am sad this evening to see this part of all of us burn," President Emmanuel Macron tweeted.
"Everything is burning, nothing will remain from the frame," Notre Dame spokesman Andre Finot told French media before firefighters announced they had saved the structure itself. But the loss of ancient artworks and artifacts to the fire is not yet known but is expected to be immense.
