'Idiot' Flattened After Walking Into Path Of Racing Cyclists
A man mindlessly walking across the road has been sent flying by a pack of high-speed cyclists competing in a time trial.
The horror smash happened during the opening stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico at Lido di Camaiore, Tuscany, on Wednesday.
Live footage of the 21.5km time trial shows a man stepping straight out onto a wet zebra crossing, seemingly unaware of the seven speeding cyclists heading straight for him.
Most of the Bora-Hansgrohe team managed to swerve out of the way just in time, but two riders, Oscar Gatto and Rafal Majka, were sent flying after they ploughed straight into him.
Footage of the incident was met with frustration and concern.
Many others called out security -- wondering why the man was allowed to cross the road in the first place.
security guard (yellow cap) was about as useful as a UK politician.— Dave Ody (@uberDaveO) March 13, 2019
terrible lack of security. totally unbearable— francis mahet (@FrancisMahet) March 13, 2019
hope the dude is ok. Looked like a pretty bad accident. The guy in the yellow cap should have done better— Funky (@FunkyDisciple) March 13, 2019
The pedestrian was taken to hospital but his condition was not considered serious, while both riders managed to finish the stage despite the incident.
Their team confirmed on Twitter that "initial reports indicate that Oscar Gatto has sustained some bruising, while Rafal Majka went down somewhat harder. Further testing will need to be done".
In good news though the crash meant Australian rider Michael Hepburn was handed the leader's blue jersey after his Mitchelton-Scott team won the opening time-trial.
