Engagement Video Goes Viral After Couple Arrested For Public Proposal

The romantic proposal had the works: a heart made from flower petals, colourful balloons and dozens of cheering strangers -- but soon the happy couple were cuffed and thrown behind bars.

It all went down in a shopping centre in the central Iranian city of Arak.

A young man took the hand of his shocked partner, proclaiming his love and asking for her hand in marriage, before slipping a ring on her finger after hearing the word 'yes'.

The exciting moment seemed innocent enough -- until police later came knocking.

The couple had offended Islamic customs, with public displays of affection generally prohibited under Iran's strict laws.

In Iran, it is unacceptable for young people “to do whatever is common in other places of the world and disregard mores, culture and religion," Mostafa Norouzi, deputy police chief in Arak, told the Shahrvand daily.

The pair’s “offence is very clear and there is no need for explanation”, Norouzi added.

The couple has since been released on bail, while video of the public proposal has gone viral online.

At the time of publication, the Twitter post had amassed a massive 3.3million views and 1,600 retweets.
