Someone Appears To Be Editing Trump's Photos To Make His Fingers Longer

US President Donald Trump playing hard and fast with the truth is nothing new, but an investigative report suggests someone at the White House has been photo-doctoring his hands to appear bigger.

If you recall, Trump has had a thing about his hands for years. It came up a lot during the 2016 presidential election, back when every pundit and their dog was sure Trump was nothing more than a bad joke.

Trump's insecurity reportedly dates back to the 1980s, when journalist Graydon Carter described him in the now-defunct Spy magazine as a "short-fingered vulgarian".

"To this day, I receive the occasional envelope from Trump," Carter wrote in his Vanity Fair editor's letter in 2015.

There is always a photo of him -- generally a tear sheet from a magazine. On all of them he has circled his hand in gold Sharpie in a valiant effort to highlight the length of his fingers. I almost feel sorry for the poor fellow because, to me, the fingers still look abnormally stubby.

It appears this insecurity has burrowed its way deep because he brought it up during a tit-for-tat between himself and Marco Rubio.

"Look at those hands. Are they small hands?" Trump asked a rally.

"And he [Rubio] referred to my hands if they’re small, something else must be small," he said.

"I guarantee you there’s no problem. I guarantee you.”

Well, it turns out they are still a problem, because a detailed analysis by Gizmodo's Mark Novak has shown that several official photographs of Trump have been doctored to make the president thinner, younger, and -- most importantly -- longer fingered.

In a comparison of two photos -- the original taken by a White House photographer on January 14, the second posted to Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts over the weekend -- Novak noticed several discrepancies.

"Trump’s right shoulder has been slimmed down and his face is looking thinner. He’s also gotten a haircut -- well, a digital one anyway -- and in one of the strangest alterations, Trump’s fingers have been made slightly longer. Seriously."

And it's not the only example. By combing Trump's social channels and comparing the images to originals from the White House Flickr account, Novak found several more instances when Trump's fingers mysteriously grew.

This rather long finger has been doctored, reckons Gizmodo. Photo: Donald J. Trump / Facebook.

It's not the first time the Trump family has been accused of releasing doctored images, either.

First Lady Melania Trump's official portrait looks like someone got a little too inspired by popular editing app FaceTune, and Donald Trump Jr's girlfriend posted a photo of the happy couple with blurry skin particles where their faces should be.

As Novak pointed out, does any of this matter? Not really. Trump's apparently doctored fingers are both a symptom of a war on truth and evidence of an old man's insecurities.

If this were Australia and Trump wasn't Trump, he could go down the Scott Morrison route of claiming any photo editing was done without his knowledge or approval. But it isn't and he won't. Probably.
