'Miraculous' Rescue Of 12-Year-Old Buried By Avalanche
A young boy has incredibly survived without serious injury, after being buried under an avalanche in the French Alps.
The 12-year-old was skiing with six others when he was swept away by a large section of snow which had roared down the mountain, local police told AP.
The boy was dragged at least 100 metres before being trapped underneath the snow for 40 minutes. A sniffer dog located him and rescuers were able to dig the boy out.
He was taken to hospital as a precaution, despite apparently emerging with no injuries.
Rescuers told AP it was a "miracle" the 12-year-old was found alive because the chances of survival are minuscule after more than 15 minutes under the snow.
"A day after Christmas, there was another gift in store," Captain Patrice Ribes said.
"We can call it a miracle."
Footage obtained by AP shows a helicopter airlifting the boy off the mountain after he was rescued.
French police in the town of Bourg Saint-Maurice said the boy was skiing off piste at the La Plagne ski resort. on Wednesday when the incident occurred.
