Iraqi Instagram Star Tara Fares Killed In Latest High Profile Attack On Women
Model and Instagram star Tara Fares, 22, was shot dead as she drove through the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Thursday morning.
It's the latest in a number of attacks on women across the country.
Fares, who had amassed almost three million followers on the social media app, was shot three times as she was driving in her convertible, reported Kurdistan 24.
She was taken to Sheik Zayed hospital but died from her wounds.
Ministry spokesman Major General Saad Maan told an Iraqi TV station that two motorcyclists shot Fares while she was inside a vehicle, reports CNN.
Maan also reportedly told local media that a suspect had been detained.
A photo published to her Instagram page after her death called it a "treacherous and cowardly incident".
Fares' life has reportedly been threatened several times prior to her death, according to local news site Bas News, causing her to briefly relocated to Kurdistan before returning to Baghdad.
Her death came one day after she was voted one of Iraq's most popular social media stars.
It's the third similar crime in the last two months. Refeef al-Yaseri, owner the of the well-known Barbie beauty centre, and Rasha al-Hassan, another beauty salon owner, both died in mysterious circumstances in their homes within one week of another.
It also comes two days after female activist Suaad Al-Ali was shot dead in Basra, Iraqi's southern city, as she was getting into her car. Her husband was wounded in the attack.
A post on Fares' Instagram shows the star with angel wings made of light.
"Angel," the caption reads. "I lose my wings."
