Three Dead, Seven Others Injured, In New Orleans Shooting

'Three more lives -- gone. It has to end,' Mayor LaToya Cantrell said.

At least three people have been killed and seven others injured in a shooting in the US city of New Orleans.

Police are investigating the shooting, which took place on South Claiborne Avenue, near the city's famous French Quarter, about 8.30pm local time on Saturday night.

Mayor LaToyal Cantrell said of the ten people who have been reported shot, three were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the New Orleans Police Department. Seven others were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

In a statement, Cantrell said "there is no place in New Orleans for this kind of violence".

"I speak for everyone in our city when I say we are disgusted, we are infuriated, and we have had more than enough," she said.

"Three more lives -- gone. It has to end. This happened near my neighbourhood ... it's unacceptable anywhere.
