Police Respond To Fresh Incident In Salisbury

It follows a number of poisonings in the area with the Russian nerve agent Novichok, which has caused the death of one.

UPDATE: Police have confirmed that the man has been taken to Salisbury District Hospital and "that there is no concern for either his health or any wider risk to the public".

Police on high alert have responded to a fresh incident in Salisbury, after a man in his 30s was found in the street near the same venue visited by Sergei and Yulia Skripal.

Wiltshire Police had cordoned off a section of road near the Zizzi restaurant, taking "highly precautionary measures to ensure public safety."

The restaurant was visited by the Skripals before they were found on a park bench, poisoned with the Russian nerve agent Novichok. Investigations are still ongoing.

"We are currently dealing with an incident in Castle Street, Salisbury, involving a man in his 30s," the police statement said.

"Given the ongoing incident in Salisbury and Amesbury, we are taking highly precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

"While we do not want people to be alarmed hope you understand the reasons behind this and we will update you when we have any further information.

"At the moment there is nothing to suggest any wider risk to the public and we would ask people to avoid the immediate area and be respectful of the cordon which is in place."

Local woman Dawn Sturgess, 44, died after coming into contact with the same nerve agent earlier this week. Her partner, Charlie Rowley, 45, who was also exposed, remains in hospital.

Police believe the poisonings are linked, and are now undertaking an "extraordinarily challenging" search for a possible container.
