Who Is Alice Marie Johnson, The Woman Kim Kardashian Is Fighting For?
Kim Kardashian West paid a visit to make a star-powered case to President Donald Trump.
It was a moment that turned heads across the globe -- Kim Kardashian West paying a visit to the White House to make a star-powered case to US President Donald Trump.
The reality star has been urging the president to secure a pardon -- or clemency -- for Alice Marie Johnson, 62, who is serving a life sentence for non-violent drug offences.
Johnson, the woman at the centre of their meeting, was convicted of drug-related charges in 1996 related to a cocaine trafficking operation based in Memphis, Tennessee.
In an op-ed, Johnson told Mic she became involved in drug trafficking as a way to make ends meet following a rough period in her life.
"I feel like a failure," she said.
"I went into complete panic and out of desperation, I made one of the worst decisions of my life to make some quick money. I became involved in a drug conspiracy."
She is serving a life sentence, and has already spent more than two decades behind bars.
In an interview with Mic, the Kim said she was moved by Johnson's story after seeing a video on the outlet's website, and would do "whatever it takes to get her out."
She told the outlet she had been in touch with Kushner over the case.
"I think that she really deserves a second chance at life," she said.
"I've been in communication with the White House and trying to bring her case to the president's desk and figure out how we can get her out."
The Associated Press reports appellate judges and the US Supreme Court have rejected Johnson's appeals, with court records showing she has a motion pending for a reduction in her sentence.
But federal prosecutors are opposed due to the large quantity of drugs involved.
Following the meeting on Wednesday, Kim tweeted "Happy Birthday Alice Marie Johnson. Today is for you".
An online petition to grant clemency for Johnson already has more than 250,000 signatures.
