Optus Apologises For Publishing Man's Driver's Licence On Website
Optus has been asked to please explain why the telco used a man's expired driver’s licence and personal details on their website without his permission.
Melbourne resident David Green, originally from South Australia, said he was recently sent a screenshot of a scanned copy of his old driver's licence.
The problem was it was being displayed for all to see on the Optus website.
His licence number and signature had been blocked out but his name, photo and date of birth was visible.
Green took to Twitter to contact Optus writing: “Hey Optus. I just learned you are using an image of my driver’s licence as an example on your website without asking me."
Speculating on how he ended up on the Optus website, Green told 10 daily he had uploaded a scanned image of his licence (with his signature and licence number blacked out) to an online blog when he moved to Melbourne.
“It’s my old South Australian licence. When I moved to Melbourne I had to switch over to a Victorian licence, so I scanned my old licence for nostalgic purposes. I used to keep a blog and wrote about moving to Melbourne, so I uploaded my scanned licence there.
“I’m assuming whoever was doing it for Optus did a google search for ‘driver’s licence’, and mine popped up.”
Optus had not returned a request for comment from 10 daily at the time of publication but did confirm to the ABC that the image was used without permission and that it would be removed.
“While the photo of Mr Green's licence was publicly available on his blog, Optus acknowledges that we did not seek permission to reproduce the image," an Optus spokesperson said.
Green said he was contacted directly by Optus following his complaint. He said he was offered an apology and told the matter would be investigated.
Green said the mistake raised questions about online privacy.
“It’s not really a good look for a telecommunications company, that prides themselves on keeping our data private,” he told 10 daily.
