Samsung's New Folding Phone Is Breaking Before It's Even Been Released

Reports of the highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Fold screen breaking in the hands of technology reviewers before the phone's release have been cropping up all over the Internet.

Rumours about Samsung's efforts to create the foldable touch display had been circulating for several years, and the expensive new phone was finally unveiled in February to widespread excitement.

Electronics chief executive DJ Koh stated at the time of its release that the creation of the Fold "answers sceptics who said that everything that could be done, has been done."

Samsung has been overwhelmed with pre-orders of the Galaxy Fold in the run-up to the April 26 release date, and were forced to stop taking orders because they couldn't keep up with demand.

Unfortunately, the luxury phone appears to be suffering from some fundamental issues with its eponymous folding screen. Namely, that it is breaking when folded.

Tech journalist Mike Murphy from Quartz has reported that five technology reviewers at various media outlets in the US have now said their Fold screens are broken -- after only two days of use.

Samsung claimed the Fold would endure at least 200,000 folds -- amounting to approximately two years of opening and closing the screen.

Apparently, the phone's screen comes with a protective film that is not supposed to be removed, but this was reportedly not made clear enough to some of the journalists.

However, some of the reviewer's tweets show the film still attached and the Fold's screen is broken nonetheless.

This is not the first time that the Korean company's ambitious technology has caused widespread problems for the brand -- in 2016 they released the Note 7 smartphone and within weeks it had been reported that the device was catching fire or exploding.

Airlines even issued warnings for travellers flying with the phone and requested that they were removed from cabins upon boarding.

The blunder was a disaster for Samsung, with 2.5 million phones recalled globally and a $US26 billion loss for Samsung.

Murphy states that Samsung has not yet been able to comment on the failures of the Galaxy Fold.
