Apple Fixes And Apologises For FaceTime Glitch, Thanks Teen Who Discovered It
Apple has issued an apology for the Facetime app glitch which allowed users to eavesdrop on other people without their knowledge.
The mishap meant while using Group FaceTime, users could hear the audio of a person they were calling before that person had answered.
Apple said on Friday it has fixed the privacy flaw and plans to turn the service back on next week via a software update.
“We sincerely apologise to our customers who were affected and all who were concerned about this security issue,” Apple said in a statement to CNBC.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we complete this process."
The company also thanked Grant Thompson, a 14-year-old who after discovering the bug tried to warn Apple for more than a week.
The Arizona teen's mother reported the issue but said she struggled to get the company's attention until other people started to figure it out too.
Thompson said she spent nine days making calls, sending emails, posting online and even writing a letter on her law firm's letterhead before Apple responded.
The FaceTime group chat feature was turned off on Monday so engineers could fix the issue after it gained traction on social media.
“We want to assure our customers that as soon as our engineering team became aware of the details necessary to reproduce the bug, they quickly disabled Group FaceTime and began work on the fix,” Apple said.
“We are committed to improving the process by which we receive and escalate these reports, in order to get them to the right people as fast as possible.”
