'How F***ing Devastating': Fans In Meltdown As Holden Drives Away From Australia

Holden fans have gone into overdrive after the iconic car brand announced it would pull out of Australia completely by 2021.

The shock announcement means Australians will no longer be able to buy a new Holden car -- ending a 160-year legacy.

Many grieved over social media, noting the important place the brand had in their lives, and in those of the generations before them.

"I didn't think I'd ever live in a country where Holden ceases to exist," one man said. "How f***ing devastating."

Another noted the brand's iconic place in Australian culture, likening the loss to the extinction of kangaroos and meat pies.

The tweet referenced a popular jingle from 1970's advertising.

"We love football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars," the tune -- stolen from a Chevrolet ad -- went.

Another used the devastating occasion to joke about the rivalry between Holden and Ford, something usually saved for the Bathurst 1000 and Adelaide 500.

In a statement released on Monday afternoon, Holden said it was devastated to be pulling out from Australia and New Zealand, given the brand's rich history.

"Holden will always have a special place in the development of our countries. As Australia and New Zealand grew, Holden was a part of the engine room fuelling that development,” GM Holden Interim Chairman and Managing Director Kristian Aquilina said in an emotional statement on Monday.



Holden To Stop Selling Cars In Australia, 600 Jobs Lost

Holden will drive away from Australia and New Zealand after 160 years, with the sale of all cars to be scrapped by next year and around 600 jobs lost.

"Today’s announcement will be felt deeply by the many people who love Holdens, drive Holdens and feel connected to our company which has been with us for 160 years and is almost ubiquitous in our lives.

"Unfortunately, all the hard work and talent of the Holden family, the support of our parent company GM and the passion of our loyal supporters have not been enough to overcome our challenges.

"We understand the impact of this decision on our people, our customers, our dealers, and our partners – and will work closely with all stakeholders to deliver a dignified and respectful transition."
