Aussie Young Gun Alexei Popyrin Into Second Round At U.S. Open

Australian young gun Alexei Popyrin has progressed to the second round of the U.S. Open for the first time with an impressive straight-sets win over Federico Delbonis.

After breezing through the opening set in 23 minutes, Popyrin had to battle from service breaks down in the second and third to carve out a 6-1 7-5 7-6 (7-5) victory over the Argentine on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old former French Open junior champion next plays either Spanish 10th seed Roberto Bautista-Agut or Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin on Thursday for a place in the last 32 in New York.
