Alex De Minaur Wins Atlanta Open But Everyone's Talking About This Mo-ment
The mo. Yes, the mo. Forget the tennis tournament. It was all about the facial fluff.
Australia's top-ranked male player Alex de Minaur will rise to number 25 in the world after beating American Taylor Fritz 6-3 7-6 to win the Atlanta Open.
It was a great performance by the 20-year-old right-hander, who played smart tennis all week. Incredibly, he didn’t face a break point all week, and held serve in all 42 of his service games.
Yet despite De Minaur's dominance, there was one thing on almost everyone's lips as the Sydney-born player grasped the unusual vase-shaped trophy.
Yes, it was the moustache above his lip, which most thought was a little, y'know, kind of, well... wrong.
Although to be fair, some loved it.
Mo' or no mo', Nick Kyrgios had lots of love for his compatriot.
But as mentioned, not everyone was as generous in their feelings towards the lip bristle. "A ferret above his lip," one fan called it, which was both amusing and exceedingly rude.
Facial fluff aside, this was a good day for De Minaur, who became the youngest winner of this tournament in its 10-year history. It was also his second ATP title for the year, after he won the Sydney International in January.
"This one is really special to me. I felt like I really needed this. To start the year with a bang and then be slowed down by injuries… you expect your level to be right there once you come back, but you have to slowly grind your way back," de Minaur said after his win.
"I’ve been playing great tennis and felt like if I could keep it all together, the good results will come. This is a week that will really help me out."
Both of de Minaur's wins this year were on hard courts, which bodes well for the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York, which starts on August 27.
