New Look Queensland Origin Team Includes Harvard Student
Queensland has made several changes for Origin III. And one of them is long overdue.
It's the selection of Melbourne Storm prop Christian Welch, a Brisbane product who was destined for a career in rugby union earlier in his career, before league people stepped in and lured him south.
Welch has a legitimate claim to being not just one of the smartest but the nicest people in rugby league. He already has a commerce degree, and as 10 daily reported last September, he jetted off to Harvard after last year's NRL Grand Final to do a course in effective negotiation skills.
We think he'll be doing negotiation of the physical kind when the Maroons take on NSW in the series decider in Sydney on July 10.
The full Queensland team is below. The other debutant apart from Welch is Corey Norman, while Game II fullback Kalyn Ponga misses out due to injury.
The big talking point is who will play fullback in the absence of Ponga. The candidates include Corey Norman, Cameron Munster, Moses Mbye or Michael Morgan.
Historically, Queensland selectors have had a policy of picking their best 17, then finding a position for them. Whether that works in nine days time remains to be seen.
