Whoa! Winx Lashes Out, Kicks Hole In Sign Ahead Of Final Race

It was a pretty major scare for everyone who loves the mare.

But the good news is Winx is OK, after the champ lashed out with her hind legs on at least two occasions after completing her trackwork at Sydney's Rosehill Racecourse this morning.

Winx is now just two days away from her final race in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick this weekend. She's going for 33-straight wins to finish a career in which she's broken every record there is to break.

But in the dawn Sydney light, as she paraded around before a huge turnout of media and admirers, the only thing Winx broke was a sign.

In fact, as this footage shows, it's quite lucky the sign was there, or her hoof could have gotten wedged in the fence.

Trainer Chris Waller was unperturbed by the display.

"As you can see she’s a horse and they’re unpredictable. But she’s very well, very fresh, very bright and ready to go," he said.

"The farrier [person who puts shoes on horses] has already called and said she’s 100 percent."

Waller wore the blame for the uncharacteristic display of aggression from his star mare.

He explained that he took her ear muffs off so that the media could see her in her natural state, but Winx then took fright at the unfamiliar noises disturbing her usually peaceful morning work.

"Obviously it’s a big morning with a lot of cameras, people everywhere. They can get a bit fresh from time to time and she’s certainly ready to explode.

"I can’t explain how well she is. As Hughie [jockey Hugh Bowman] said during the week, she’s never been better."

10 daily sports editor Ant Sharwood will be covering all the colour and action of Winx's last race, trackside at Randwick for 10 daily this Saturday.
