Matildas Lose 5-3 To USA Despite Scoring Three Sumptuous Goals

The bad news? The Matildas lost 5-3 to the USA in their friendly match in Colorado today.

The good news is that it was a high quality game of football and both sides scored some absolutely sumptuous goals.

Like this one from Lisa De Vanna, who at age 34, has definitely still got it, as she netted her 47th goal in her 147th appearance for the national side.

Remember also that the USA are ranked number one in the world and the Matildas sixth. So with the 2019 FIFA World Cup in France now just two months away, it's definitely a positive for the Aussies that they looked so good in parts against the world's best.

Yep, not a slap in the face for our girls at all. Except for the bit that actually was a slap in the face.

Despite the fact that Australia scored three really good goals, our defence was a little too casual at times -- a facet of the game new coach Ante Milicic will no doubt work on in weeks to come.

The last goal of the game summed that up. It took just two touches for the USA to go the length of the field and score. The goalie kicked it, Mallory Pugh finished.

Not pretty for Australia. But as mentioned, there's every reason to feel it's only a minor speed hump on the road to France -- like this beautiful strike after a fantastic turn from Caitlin Foord.

Captain Sam Kerr scored the other goal for Australia.
