And That's 31. Unstoppable Winx Wins Chipping Norton Stakes At Randwick

She's done it again. Because of course she has.

Winx has won the Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick after a huge scare.

It’s the 31st straight win in the champion mare’s record-breaking streak, and a world record 23rd win at Group 1 level -- the top tier of international thoroughbred racing.

But this was not an easy win.

Happy Clapper -- who has run second to Winx more often than any other horse -- made her work for it. Yet the great horse got there. Because, she is Winx.

Winx started at odds of $1.08 (meaning you would have won just 8 cents for a $1 bet). That was equal to the shortest odds she’d started in any race she’d contested, and the bookies were as usual spot on in their assessment.

Happy Clapper opened a huge lead early in the race, and led by five lengths at the top of the Randwick straight. It's a long straight. And with 100 metres to go, Winx had overhauled her rival, and pulled away to win by a length-and-a-half.

Trainer Chris Waller was his usual calm but emotional self after the race.

“I can see the sun going down and hopefully we can get through two more runs,” he said through trembling lips and moistened eyes.

“Thanks to one thing. The horse.”

Meanwhile jockey Hugh Bowman, flanked by his two young daughters, was characteristically unperturbed by the drama that had just played out.

“Maybe maybe another jockey might have panicked with 700 metres to go,” the jockey said, in reference to the huge mid-race gap between Happy Clapper and Winx, who was racing midfield.

“But when I balanced her up, she found that other gear and did it relatively easily in the end.”

“I had the horse to get me out of trouble, and she’s done it time and time again.”

The great mare's next target is the George Ryder Stakes At Rosehill -- the Sydney racecourse where she is stabled -- on March 23.

And then it's down to one. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 13. Winx has won the race the past two years, and will be aiming to farewell the Australian turf with a memorable treble of victories.
