Roosters Grand Final Hero Gives Young Fan So Much More Than He Asked For

He never expected anything like this.

When Tyson Lawrence sent a hand-written letter off to Roosters forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves a few weeks ago, the original intention was to wish an injured player well.

"I am a massive fan of you and the Roosters," the card read.

"I love it when you put on bone crushing hits! I hope I be like you one day. I love Rugby league, I've been playing since I was 4 and now I am 9."

"I'll be there, like I am every week."

"I hope you recover and play against the Eels," it continued.

"Good luck to you and the boys in the finals. I'll be there, like I am every week."

Waerea-Hargreaves was sidelined after scans revealed he had broken ribs during the Round 22 match against South Sydney.

Clearly touched by the message, the Roosters prop pulled together a little more than a signature.

In the mail Lawrence received the boots Waerea-Hargreaves wore during the 2013 grand final. The Roosters defeated Manly 26-18, coming back in the second half to clinch their first premiership since 2002.

Waerea-Hargreaves and the little guy who is arguably among his biggest fans finally met on Thursday at the annual NRL Grand Final fan day.

Speaking with Ten Eyewitness News, the 29-year-old Rooster said his gifts were "the least" he could have done.

“To send him just a few little gifts, it obviously keeps that dream alive," he said.

"I remember when I was his age, it’s just exciting times and to be able to do such a small thing like that it’s pretty special."

Though he has some growing before he can take the field in the boots, Lawrence said he just couldn't believe they were now his.

The NRL Grand Final kicks off this Sunday as the Roosters attempt to spoil the Melbourne Storm's shot at back-to-back premierships.

Irrespective of whether they succeed or fail, one fan will be watching them try.
