Celebrated former opening batsman Justin Langer has been announced as new Head Coach of the Australian Men's Cricket Team on Thursday, almost a month after Darren Lehmann stepped down from the role after the South African ball-tampering scandal.

Langer, 47,  will coach the team in all three formats of the game - Test, one-dayers and T20 - and will start his four-year tenure on May 22.

This time frame will see Langer coach the team through the 2019 World Cup, the 2020 T20 World Cup and two Ashes series.

The Aussie cricketing hero has been at the helm of the Australian coaching team on an interim basis before, leading the team during an ODI-Tri Series in the Caribbean in 2016 and in a T20 International Series on home soil in 2017.

Langer, who represented his country in 105 Tests and eight ODI's as a player,  said the appointment was "humbling", but did not shy away from the "challenges" the embattled team faced in the future.

“There will be some significant challenges ahead for our group, but there is a wealth of talent in Australian cricket that I know will do us all proud," he said.

“I’m thoroughly looking forward to working with all players, as we strive for a successful men’s team across all formats, with the support and respect of the Australian public.

“I am very excited about the scope I now have to coach the country that supported me so much in my cricketing career."

CEO of Cricket Australia, James Sutherland, said Langer had been a "clear standout" in CA's succession plan for life after Darren Lehmann.

“In addition to professional development opportunities, this plan has included several coaches stepping into the head role to relieve Darren at times, and to also provide support roles, including Justin, and forms part of our long running succession planning process," he said.

“Justin’s work ethic, leadership and values are among his strongest attributes – and he is widely respected across the global cricket community.

“We firmly believe Justin is the right person to lead this team and have huge confidence in what he will bring to the role."

Langer has been a part of the Australian coaching set-up before, as an assistant coach in 2009 for three years.

He was named Head Coach of the Western Australia Warriors and the Perth Scorchers in 2012, and has since become the most successful BBL coach in history, winning the title in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17 with the Scorchers.

Langer also led the Warriors to two JLT One-Day Cup Titles in 2014-2015 and 2017-2018.
