WA Minister Alannah MacTiernan Reveals Cancer Battle
West Australian agriculture minister and former federal MP Alannah MacTiernan has revealed she is battling breast cancer.
In a statement on Monday, MacTiernan said she has had surgery after being diagnosed two months ago, and was currently undergoing chemotherapy.
"The prognosis is good," she said.
"My hair has often been a topic of discussion among the political class: I have always wanted the opportunity to wear wigs - now I have an excuse," she continued.
"Tens of thousands of Australian women go through this process. Everyone deals with it in their own way — I am focused on getting on with my job, as I have continued to do for the last two months."
MacTiernan served in WA state politics through the 1990s and 2000s, then held the title of mayor of Vincent until 2013. She won the federal seat of Perth at the 2013 election but chose not to contest the 2016 election, instead returning to state politics in 2017.
