Senator Leyonhjelm Censured By Parliament Over Hanson-Young Comments
Parliament has voted to censure Senator David Leyonhjelm over comments made to Sarah Hanson-Young.
Crossbench senator David Leyonhjelm has been censured by parliament for telling the Greens' Sarah Hanson-Young to "stop shagging men".
Senator Leyonhjelm made a defiant speech on Tuesday, fighting back against the Greens before they formally condemned him for his comments to Senator Hanson-Young in June.
The initial stoush erupted during a debate on a motion to allow women to carry pepper spray and mace to protect them from would-be rapists and murderers.
Senator Leyonhjelm said he was retaliating, saying another senator had heard Senator Hanson-Young say women wouldn't need pepper spray if men weren't rapists.
"Would it be OK to say women wouldn't need pepper spray if blacks weren't rapists?" Senator Leyonhjelm told parliament on Tuesday.
Greens leader Richard Di Natale said Senator Hanson-Young rejected saying something along the lines of "all men were rapists".
"It doesn't matter what was said to him. His response was disgraceful, it was shameful, it was sexist, it was misogynist and it was personal," Senator Di Natale said.
But Senator Leyonhjelm called on the Greens to detail the initial interjection.
Senator Leyonhjelm also denied he was being sued for defamation over statements he made in media interviews about Senator Hanson-Young's private life.
"This statement of claim which limits what the defamation can be about is accusing me of calling Senator Hanson-Young a hypocrite and misandrist," he said.
"The Greens should come clean to their supporters on this misrepresentation."
Government frontbencher James McGrath said a censure motion wasn't warranted after Senate President Scott Ryan issued a warning to upper house MPs about parliamentary behaviour on Monday.
But Labor and the Greens teamed up for a 30-28 victory on the vote.
After the "stop shagging men" comment, Senator Hanson-Young questioned Senator Leyonhjelm and called him a creep when he confirmed his sledge.
He then told her to "f*** off".
