Young Hero Heard A Puppy Crying And Squealing And Leapt Into Action

Koda's family has a lot to be thankful for this Christmas.

Just four days ago, the eight-week-old labrador nearly drowned in a frightening accident.

The little pup had managed to squeeze through a gap in the pool fence and slip into the water.

That was when neighbour Cadan Byrne heard squealing and cries from next door.

When he looked over the fence, he saw the puppy struggling in the water.

"She was going under and then she was coming back up and paddling there, then she was going under," he told 10 News First.

"The first thing that popped in my head was, I've got to go over and save that puppy."

Just 10-years-old, Cadan sprung into action, scaling two fences and leaping into the pool fully clothed to rescue Koda.

The puppy was waterlogged and exhausted, but after a few minutes, she was back on her feet.

Cadan's mum Kathleen believes it was her son's courage and fast footwork that prevented disaster.

"I couldn't get even near the fence or over the fence, I couldn't get in the gate, so without him there I don't think it would have been a good outcome for the puppy," she said,

"It almost made me cry. I was just so proud of him. You get those moments as a mum and I'd say that was one of them,"

Cadan and his mother Kathleen.

Koda has recovered well, and, after being brought together by the frightening near miss, she and Cadan are now firm friends.
