Sea Life Sydney Get Its First Same-Sex Couple, Penguins Sphen And Magic
Meet Sphen and Magic, or as they’re perhaps affectionately called, Sphengic!
The couple like to spend their time waddling around and going for swims at Sea Life Sydney where they’re hatching an egg together.
Sphengic's love story started before breeding season at the aquarium when they started collecting special ice pebbles to create a nest. Soon, they were inseparable.
Sound familiar? Cast your mind back to that time when Leslie -- aka Amy Poehler -- married two penguins who both turned out to be male in an episode of Parks and Rec. It was glorious.
Now, back to Sphengic.
Gentoo penguins keep their eggs warm on pebble nesting rings. They’ll swap between parenting duties, incubating the egg and patrolling the nest to ward off any unwanted visitors.
According to Sea Life, the pair -- its first same-sex couple -- were “absolute naturals” with a dummy egg, they were handed a real egg from another couple.
“Whilst Sphen is older and is excellent at incubating, Magic is younger and still mastering his skill,” a spokesperson said.
“The pair make a great team, and there are often days where the egg cannot be seen (which is really good for penguin breeding!)
