Bulldog Zsa Zsa Takes Out Ugliest Dog Title

They may be ugly but they're still mighty good boys.

The results are in, and a nine-year-old English bulldog has taken out the 2018 World's Ugliest Dog title in the San Francisco Bay Area.

After finding Zsa Zsa on a pet-finding site, the bulldog's owner Megan Brainard of Anoka, Minnesota, will take home $US1500 ($A2015) for her pooche's win.

Led By their handlers, the dogs strut their stuff down a red carpet, flaunting their imperfections which include hairless bodies and lolling tongues.

The dogs are evaluated by a panel of judges.

This year's contestants included a blackhead-covered Chinese Crested-Dachshund mutt, a bulldog mix with excess wrinkly skin and a Pekingese named Wild Thang.

The naturally hairless chihuaha Rascal Deux was beaten out for the title, but certainly gave a stellar performance. Image: AAP

Martha -- a 57-kilogram Neopolitan Mastiff with a droopy face and gas -- won the contest last year.

The contest is in its 30th year. It is usually held on Friday nights, but organisers moved the competition to Saturday in an effort to draw a bigger audience.
