Twenty years ago, Victoria’s best dog groomer was working as a chef.
But Trish Wileman’s love for dogs convinced her to make a career change and she has never looked back.
“I’ve got the fur in me now,” Trish told Ten Eyewitness News.
“I've probably got fur in me, out of me, all over me and that's fine. That’s the way I like it. I have fur with my coffee and I probably have it with my dinner too. That’s just me. Take it or leave it.”
Trish has been a dog groomer for more than two decades, and her hard work has paid off -- her shop ‘Hairy Cherubs Dog Grooming’, 45km north of Melbourne in Whittlesea, has been voted “the best in Victoria.”
It seems it is a passion that runs in the family, with Trish’s husband also making the career change from cooking to grooming.
“We wanted to do something we completely loved,” Trish explained.
“I was doing dog grooming while working as a chef. Then the grooming tookover, and I’m really passionate about it.”
Trish said the secret to her success is her unconditional care for the dogs she is grooming.
“When they come in, I care about them and when they go home, I check on them,” she said.
From shampoo and cologne preferences, bows and accessories, to tail trims – Trish says it’s the finer details that make all the difference.
Not only does Trish look after dogs of all shapes and sizes, she also looks after their owners.
“I like the family feel that I try to create here, and I like to make sure everyone feels special, and their dogs are very special.
Her shop will often provide owners a cup of coffee, cup of tea or a glass of champagne, and “do some very silly, fun, party things.”
“We just try to make them happy,” she said.
“They love it and it’s a different experience. It’s nothing like just dropping off your dog and then picking them up at 4’o clock.”
The demand for dog grooming services in Australia is continuing to grow, and the industry has nearly doubled in value in the past five years.
In 2013, the industry was worth $300 million, and by 2016 it had jumped to $580 million
