Man Arrested Over Alleged Sexual Assault Of Jogger On Popular Walking Trail
A man is being questioned by police after a jogger was sexually assaulted in Melbourne's north.
The woman was allegedly grabbed from behind and sexually assaulted as she ran along the popular Merri Creek trail in Coburg on Tuesday night.
She managed to flee to a nearby food outlet to raise the alarm, but by the time emergency services arrived, her alleged attacker had fled.
At about 1.30 am on Wednesday officers arrested a 25-year-old man in Carlton.
He is assisting police with their inquiries. Charges are yet to be laid.
The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police have cordoned off the crime scene with forensics units, the search and rescue squad and police divers arriving at the Merri Creek Trail just before 11 am on Wednesday.
Officers spent some time wading through Merri Creek searching for evidence.
Metal detectors have also been in use.
It is not clear whether anything of note has been seized.
