Man Jailed For 'Vile' Acts And Raping Inmate While Watching Royal Wedding
A notorious sex offender who raped a young, terrified fellow prisoner while watching Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle on TV has had his jail time extended.
Troy Allan Burley, 41, raped the 21-year-old man, who was in prison for the first time, in attacks starting in May 2018.
He was sentenced in Brisbane on Wednesday to another seven years in prison for the rapes and sexual assaults, after a District Court jury previously found him guilty.
Judge Jennifer Rosengren said Burley made his victim perform "vile, gross and degrading" acts for his own sexual gratification.
One rape at Wolston Correctional Centre occurred while the man was watching the royal wedding on television.
She said the young victim had felt "extremely trapped and exploited" and "worthless and humiliated".
"He talks of nights when he cried himself to sleep because of the way you were manipulating, using, controlling and prying on him," Judge Rosengren said in sentencing.
The court heard the victim did not lock his door even though he felt terrified because Burley had threatened numerous times there would be "physical punishment" if he did.
Judge Rosengren said Burley had been out of jail for just 13 months of his adult life.
Burley was previously sentenced to jail for violent attacks on four women in the 1990s, three of them at railway stations, earning him the nickname of the "railway rapist".
While on parole for the sexual offences he was convicted of property offences including the theft of the underwear.
Instead of being released from prison in February, Burley will now begin serving another term.
Burley appeared to be emotional as he was sentenced to a total of six years for three sexual assaults on his victim, to run concurrently with the seven-year term for three rapes.
Burley sobbed in court last week when Judge Rosengren reviewed his violent and terrifying history of attacks on the four women in the 1990s.
He was grabbing the strangers from behind, covering their faces and taunting them during his attacks.
Burley used a knife and threatened to kill them if they went to police. He demanded to know where the victims lived and if they had children because he would "enjoy having sex with little girls".
The court heard Burley saw his partner of 10 years about once a month but had no contact with his family or daughters.
