A man has died after he was shot by police at a home in Sydney's Northern Beaches.

Police were called to a home on Mona Vale Road, Ingleside just after 9.35pm on Saturday following reports of an alleged domestic-related incident.

Three officers from Northern Beaches police spoke to a 53-year-old man who was armed with a shotgun. Police allege the man pointed the gun at them, before he was shot in the leg.

Police performed first aid on the man while an ambulance arrived. He was then treated by paramedics and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition. He later died in hospital.

A critical incident investigation is now underway regarding the circumstances that lead to the man's death. Police were wearing body-worn cameras at the time of the alleged incident and that footage will form part of the investigation.

A crime scene has also been established at the Ingleside home which will be examined by a specialist forensic team.

The investigation into the man's death will be subject to an independent review and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
