Man Charged Over Vandalism Of Iconic Dog On The Tuckerbox Statue

Gundagai's dog on the tuckerbox statue has been dumped in a well, with a man now charged after handing himself into police.

A motorist on the side of the Hume Highway saw a man allegedly vandalising the statue about 4pm on Sunday, police said.

The dog and tuckerbox statue ended up in the wishing well surrounding the statue.

Police released images of a man and a woman they wanted to speak to in relation to the incident, and around 11am on Monday, a man from Wagga Wagga handed himself into police.

The man, aged 28, was arrested and charged with one count of destroy or damage property.

"He has been granted conditional bail and is due to face Wagga Wagga Local Court on 11 September 2019," police said.

The statue was unveiled in 1932, inspired by the popular poem 'Bullocky Bill'. It is a famous landmark in the small town, and is immortalised in a second song, 'The Road To Gundagai'.
