'Heartbreaking': Abandoned Newborn Baby Found Dead In Backyard
The body of a newborn baby was found abandoned in the backyard of a Newcastle home. Now, police hold grave concerns for the mother.
Emergency services were called to a home on Church St in the suburb of Stockton shortly after 7am on Tuesday morning, after the baby's lifeless body was discovered by the occupant of the house.
Officers attended the scene, and a police operation is currently underway at the home which is now a crime scene.
The situation was described as "heartbreaking" and "very, very sad" by Brett Greentree, District Commander, Newcastle City Police District.
Police hold "very serious and grave concerns" for the welfare of the mother, who may need to seek urgent medical assistance.
"We are particularly concerned about this female who has given birth, which we believe was very, very recently, so we are concerned about her welfare," Greentree said.
The baby is yet to be identified. It is not yet know how old it is or how it died.
A post-mortem examination is expected to provide some answers, but police are urging anyone with information about the baby or the mother to contact Crime Stoppers.
The occupant of the house has been assisting police with the investigation, but is not believed to have any connection with the baby, Greentree said.
"That person has been assisting us with our inquiries as are the rest of the neighbours in the area who have been forthcoming and are assisting police in the early stages of the investigation," he said.
