Arrests Made Over Two Alleged Historical Abduction, Sexual Assaults
Two men have been charged with the alleged abduction and sexual assault of two women in Melbourne more than 30 years ago.
A 61-year-old man is due to face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with 38 offences including abduction by force and aggravated rape.
Another man, aged 56 and already in custody, has also been charged with the same offences after also being interviewed on Thursday. He is due to face court on June 14.
The first incident allegedly occurred in South Yarra on November 22, 1985 and the second at Nunawading on March 26, 1986.
In both instances, young women were allegedly dragged off the street and raped.
In 1985, an 18-year-old girl, known as 'Susan', came forward to police alleging she had been abducted from her work in South Yarra.
Susan said she was walking back to her car when she was dragged by two men towards Bray Street and thrown into a white Commodore, where she was also blindfolded and gagged.
The girl was taken to an unknown property and sexually assaulted, before she was dumped in Richmond later that night.
Investigators have previously made public appeals for information and offered a $350,000 reward in April.
A second woman, known as 'Debbie', came forward after seeing the appeal, claiming she had been abducted and raped in 1986.
She was 19 years old when she says four men abducted her from Nunawading, in Melbourne's east, blindfolded and gagged her, took her to a house in an unknown location, and raped her.
Police believe the two alleged incidents are related and investigations are ongoing.
