Young Girl In Hospital After Consuming Suspected Drug-Laced Food
A young girl is in hospital and a man arrested after the child reportedly ate drug-laced food in the Hunter region of NSW.
The girl, nine, presented to John Hunter Hospital on Monday in an unresponsive state and with bruising on her body.
Doctors were told she had consumed food containing an illicit drug, and may have been given non-prescribed medication.
Following inquiries from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, a man who is known to the girl was arrested at a Raymond Terrace home shortly before 9pm.
The man, 28, was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and refused bail. Police will allege in court that the man assaulted the young girl, causing bruising.
Forensics and pathology tests are still being conducted, while the young girl remains in hospital with her condition being monitored.
"Police are reminding parents and carers to remove any non-prescribed medication or adulterated food from areas that can be accessed by children to prevent the risk of exposure to and ingestion of potentially dangerous substances," police said.
Investigations are continuing.
